The City of Philadelphia is opening doors to its cultural and historical institutions by offering free or pay-what-you-wish admission during Free Museum Days. Each day from Thursday, June 19, through Friday, July 4, at least one Philly museum will extend complimentary or pay-what-you-wish admission to visitors.
According to a Visit Philadelphia announcement, 44 museums and historic sites across the city are participating this year. Included are art museums such as the Barnes Foundation, cultural attractions like the African American Museum, history museums such as the Independence Seaport Museum, and science museums such as the Science History Institute. Guests can also explore historic mansions such as the Fairmount Park Charm Houses.
Among the museum highlights are:
- African American Museum in Philadelphia: The museum will offer free admission on a first-come, first-served basis with entry times at 10 a.m., noon, and 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 19. The museum will also host its Juneteenth Block Party, featuring live music, food trucks, a market, books, and more.
- The Print Center: Nestled in Rittenhouse Square, The Print Center, a printmaking and photo gallery, will present exhibits, artwork, educational programs, and more on Saturday, June 21, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visitors can view the museum’s current solo exhibition, Cecilia Paredes: By my side or back of me, which exhibits works from the Peruvian-born, Philadelphia-based artist.
- Independence Seaport Museum: Located along the waterfront of the Delaware River, Independence Seaport Museum invites guests to learn about the city’s maritime history. During Free Museum Day on Monday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors can explore the massive Spanish-American War-era Cruiser USS Olympia and World War II Submarine USS Becuna outside the museum.
