The Philadelphia Zoo announced another milestone in its conservation efforts, as three more critically endangered Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises have hatched.
These hatchlings join the four females who emerged earlier this year, bringing the total to seven. Their parents, Mommy and Abrazzo, who are estimated to be around 100 years old, are the zoo’s oldest residents.
Mommy holds particular significance as one of the most genetically valuable tortoises in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP). She recently became the oldest first-time mother of her species.
New Hatchlings
Currently, the male hatchlings are thriving behind the scenes in the Reptile and Amphibian House, steadily growing and adjusting to their new world. The first male egg began hatching on April 14. Followed by the remaining two in subsequent weeks.
While these newcomers remain unnamed, the zoo recently invited the public to help name the four females. They are now known as Dorothy, Rose, Blanche, and Sophia. An homage to The Golden Girls.
Philadelphia Zoo’s dedication to breeding and conservation continues as it monitors another clutch of eggs laid by Mommy in January. Of the 16 eggs incubated, nine show promising development, with six expected to be male and three female. These eggs have now reached their potential hatch window and may begin hatching in the coming days.
The Philadelphia Zoo’s Initiative
The births are part of a larger AZA SSP initiative designed to ensure the species’ survival and maintain genetic diversity. Western Santa Cruz Galapagos tortoises are critically endangered due to habitat destruction, invasive species, and human-wildlife conflict.
To support these extraordinary tortoises, the Philadelphia Zoo has created special-edition t-shirts featuring the baby tortoises and Mommy. The proceeds will contribute to their ongoing care. Visitors can also meet Mommy and Abrazzo during exclusive behind-the-scenes tours.
